Bangkok: The Prime Minister of Thailand has announced a bolstering of countermeasures against landmines along the Thai-Cambodian border. This comes amid increased tensions following Cambodia’s denial of planting such mines, which Thailand insists it does not possess.
According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Anutin Charnvirakul addressed the media after a cabinet meeting, emphasizing the suspension of the Joint Declaration with Cambodia until hostile actions cease. The Prime Minister clarified that the suspension would remain in place until the Thai military confirms the absence of hostility from Cambodia.
The Prime Minister highlighted that a National Security Council meeting had been conducted and expressed plans to visit injured soldiers in the border area. Although Cambodia has denied involvement in laying mines, the Thai government remains firm in its stance that it does not possess such devices.
When questioned about Thailand’s response to Cambodia’s denial and what has been termed as false news, the Prime Minister refrained from providing specifics. He indicated that the Minister of Defense and the Minister of Foreign Affairs have been tasked with addressing the issue and have already undertaken necessary actions.
The Prime Minister was also queried about his satisfaction with the current measures in place by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO). He affirmed that the measures are in accordance with his directives and suggested there is no need for further intensification, describing the current actions as sufficiently intense.
Finally, regarding the military’s perspective, the Prime Minister noted that all opinions have been considered in the decision-making process.
