Bangkok: The Thai Foreign Ministry has reiterated its stance that Thailand is not prepared to enter into negotiations at this time, following concerns expressed by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim regarding the ongoing situation between Thailand and Cambodia.
According to Thai News Agency, the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that there has been no contact from the United States, despite media reports suggesting that President Donald Trump was planning to call Thai Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. These reports emerged after Trump allegedly mentioned during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania that he intended to speak with the leaders of both Cambodia and Thailand to address the escalating conflict along their shared borders.
Mr. Nikorndej Plangkul, spokesperson for the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, clarified that the ministry has not received direct communication from the United States. Information about Trump’s intentions only surfaced through social media channels. As of now, no formal request for a high-level meeting has been made, particularly with the Thai Prime Minister. Should such a meeting be proposed, the ministry awaits to hear the specific message President Trump wishes to convey to Thailand or whether it might include a message of goodwill to both nations.
In response to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s social media statement, which expressed concern over the clashes and urged both countries to maintain open communication channels, utilize existing cooperation mechanisms, and offer Malaysia’s support for the restoration of diplomatic relations based on international law, the Thai spokesperson reiterated that if a proposal for negotiations were made, the response would align with previous statements. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has maintained that Thailand is not yet ready to negotiate.
