Bangkok: Applications are now open for a Thai representative to contest the position of Director-General of the World Health Organization in 2027. The government has initiated this process to elevate Thailand's influence in global public health and to contribute to international health agendas.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, stated that under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's leadership, the government is focused on enhancing Thailand's international presence, particularly in public health. The Ministry of Public Health has begun accepting applications for candidates to represent Thailand in the upcoming WHO Director-General election, set for 2027.
The Cabinet approved the decision to field a candidate on April 28, 2026, and tasked the Ministry of Public Health with overseeing the selection process. A committee featuring experts in public health, international relations, and international organizations has been formed to ensure transparency and efficiency.
Mr. Pattana Promphat, Minister of Public Health, noted the significance of the WHO Director-General role, emphasizing its impact on global health policy, disease response, health security, and international cooperation. Eligible applicants must be Thai nationals, at least 45 years old, and meet WHO criteria, including achievements in health fields, international experience, leadership skills, and a commitment to WHO's mission.
Applications are being accepted until July 17, 2026, at the Ministry of Public Health. Candidates will present their vision to the selection committee on July 23, 2026, after which a list of candidates will be submitted to the Cabinet for approval.
Ms. Lalida highlighted that participating in this election underscores the strength of Thailand's public health system and offers an opportunity to influence global health agendas. She noted that a successful candidacy would elevate Thailand's international profile and enhance cooperation opportunities.
