Thaksin Confirms Dialogue with Hun Sen to Resolve Thai-Cambodian Tensions

Bangkok: Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has confirmed his discussions with Samdech Hun Sen regarding tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, expressing optimism that the situation will be resolved amicably. Thaksin urged against exacerbating the issue and suggested a shift from military confrontations to friendly sports like sepak takraw.

According to Thai News Agency, Thaksin addressed the ongoing conflict following a clash at Chong Bok in Ubon Ratchathani Province, emphasizing that relations between the elders and military of both countries remain strong. He highlighted that the contested area is a No Man's Land with unclear borders, suggesting that neither side should claim rights to reduce tensions. Thaksin noted that border demarcation can take centuries and that the area in question is largely forested.

Thaksin revealed that the two governments maintain open lines of communication. While he confirmed regular personal conversations with Hun Sen, he stressed the importance of not escalating the conflict and proposed that any military engagements be replaced with cooperative sports activities.

Addressing concerns over potential troop deployments by Cambodia, Thaksin assured that there would be no exacerbation of the situation, noting that all troops have now withdrawn. He emphasized the need for consistency in agreements between the Thai and Cambodian armies, advocating for mutual cooperation and understanding among local communities to prevent further conflict.

When questioned about Samdech Hun Sen's recent social media comments regarding temple-related tensions, Thaksin admitted he had not yet reviewed the statements.
