Theerapong Silachai Secures First Gold Medal with World Record in Clean and Jerk

Bangkok: Gold medal arrives for Thailand as Theerapong Silachai breaks the world record in the clean and jerk, clinching the first gold medal for the Thai weightlifting team.

According to Thai News Agency, in the men’s 60 kg weightlifting category, six competitors took part, with Thailand represented by Petty Officer 3rd Class Theerapong Silachai. The 2024 Paris Olympics silver medalist showcased remarkable prowess in the snatch, successfully lifting 126 kg, 129 kg, and 131 kg across three attempts. In the clean and jerk, Theerapong demonstrated exceptional strength and technique, lifting 162 kg on his first attempt, 165 kg on his second, and a record-breaking 173 kg on his third attempt, surpassing the previous world record of 172 kg. His combined total of 304 kg secured the gold medal for Thailand.

The silver medal was claimed by Indonesia’s Ricco Saputra, who lifted a total of 295 kg, with 132 kg in the snatch and 163 kg in the clean and jerk. Meanwhile, Vietnam’s Duong Khe earned the bronze medal with a total lift of 289 kg, consisting of 125 kg in the snatch and 164 kg in the clean and jerk.

Following his victory, Theerapong expressed his dedication to rigorous training in pursuit of the gold medal. He noted that despite breaking the world record, the weight felt manageable, and he believes he could potentially lift between 175-176 kilograms. Looking ahead, he aims to intensify his training regimen to secure a gold medal at the upcoming Asian Games in Japan next year.

The event was graced by the presence of Major General (female) Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, who presided over the medal presentation ceremony, emphasizing the significance of this achievement for the Thai weightlifting community.
