Washington: The United States is gearing up to produce commemorative $1 coins featuring President Donald Trump's image on the obverse side, marking the nation's 250th anniversary of independence. This initiative was announced by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Basen, highlighting a significant move to honor the historical milestone.
According to Thai News Agency, the new coin will carry the inscriptions "Freedom," "We believe in God," and the years 1776 to 2026. The reverse side of the coin will display a bald eagle from the presidential seal. This design replaces the initial concept released last year, which depicted President Trump raising his fist alongside text referencing the assassination attempt in 2024.
The coin's design has become a subject of controversy and legal scrutiny due to existing U.S. laws that prohibit using the likeness of living individuals on national currency, with exceptions made only for paper banknotes. These laws do not extend to coins produced by the U.S. Mint. Additionally, while previous legislation permitted the creation of a commemorative coin for the 250th anniversary, it included a clause barring the depiction of living persons. The U.S. Treasury Department has yet to issue further comments regarding these legal challenges.
