Ukrainian Drone Strikes Trigger Black Rain in Moscow

Moscow: Ukrainian drone strikes against Russia have resulted in "black rain" in Moscow, following the largest drone strike since the start of the war. The strikes targeted Moscow's oil refineries in the Kapotnia region, causing massive fires and toxic smoke that blanketed the Russian capital's airspace.

According to Thai News Agency, Ukrainian forces launched nearly 200 long-range attack drones towards Moscow. Despite efforts by Russian air defenses to intercept them, some drones successfully breached the defenses, striking strategic targets, notably the Gazprom Neft oil refinery in Kapotnia. This refinery is a critical facility that produces a significant portion of the gasoline and diesel used in the capital.

Viral videos captured the dramatic moment a drone collided with a large oil tank, resulting in a massive explosion. The explosion sent a thick, spherical metal lid soaring hundreds of feet into the air, followed by a huge fireball. Thick black smoke rose thousands of feet, mingling with the clouds and resulting in rain carrying soot and sticky black oil droplets.

Residents in the affected areas reported black oil stains on cars, windows, and clothing. Russian authorities advised people to remain indoors, keep windows closed, and wear masks if venturing outside due to contamination. Commercial flights were suspended, major airports and highways were temporarily closed due to poor visibility and smoke hazards. Seventeen people were injured in the incident.

The attack further strains Russia's energy situation, as previous attacks on oil facilities had already led to sales limitations and long queues at gas stations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy justified the attack as a response to Russia's missile strike on Kyiv, which damaged the Pechersk Lavra monastery. He warned that Moscow would face consequences similar to those inflicted on Ukraine to push Russia towards negotiations.

President Putin, at a summit with ASEAN leaders in Kazan, has not commented directly. However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and senior officials have vowed strong retaliatory measures against Ukraine.
