Wiener neustadt: An Austrian court has sentenced a 21-year-old Austrian national to 15 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to planning an attack on Taylor Swift's Eras Tour concert in Vienna, Austria, in August 2024. A state court jury in Wiener Neustadt sentenced the man on multiple terrorism-related charges, including membership in a terrorist organization and providing and training for terrorist purposes. The 21-year-old defendant, identified only as "Beran A." under Austrian privacy laws, faced a maximum sentence of 20 years and pleaded guilty to charges related to planning the concert attack.
According to Thai News Agency, Beran A. apologized to the court before the jury considered his guilt, while his defense attorney stated that he was not a leader or ideological mastermind. In addition to the Vienna plot, he admitted to attempting a stabbing in Dubai, UAE, in early 2024, but panicked and did not carry it out. The case also involves another defendant, Arda K., a Slovak national sentenced to 12 years in prison, who traveled to Dubai and Istanbul, Turkey, in early 2024 to attempt stabbings with Beran A. They are also linked to another accomplice, Hasan E., who is currently being held in Saudi Arabia on charges of stabbing a security guard at the Al-Haram Mosque in Mecca in March 2024.
Austrian media reported that a suspect loyal to the Islamic State (IS) group planned to use knives and homemade explosives to kill a large crowd outside the Ernst Happel Stadium, a concert venue in Vienna, in August 2024. However, intelligence from the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) led to the suspect's arrest just one day before the show, forcing organizers to cancel all three performances for the safety of the approximately 200,000 attendees.
Taylor Swift herself revealed in a documentary about her concert tour and a statement on Instagram that the incident left her feeling extremely frightened and burdened with guilt towards her fans. However, she also expressed immense gratitude to the authorities for handling the situation, resulting in the loss of a performance rather than the loss of lives.
