Commerce Ministry Boosts Value of ‘Super Mini Fruits’ Amid Surging Production

Bangkok: Fruit production in the country has seen a significant surge this year, prompting the Commerce Ministry to promote "super mini fruits" as a strategic measure to increase produce value and support farmers' prices. The Department of Internal Trade is actively implementing its 2026 fruit management plan to accommodate the expected increase in fruit production and maintain market price stability.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Wittayakorn Maneenet, Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade, highlighted that there has been a notable increase in the production volume of several fruit types, with some experiencing growth of over 30 percent compared to the previous year. To manage the influx of produce, the department is promoting the sale of "super mini fruits," such as small durians and mangosteens, which are gaining popularity among consumers. These initiatives aim to enhance the value of such fruits and generate additional income for farmers. Collaborations with Talad Thai and central markets across the country are underway to expand distribution channels for these fruits.

This year, the Department of Internal Trade plans to manage over 1 million tons of domestic fruit production out of a total of over 6 million tons. Central markets, retail and wholesale stores, and major operators will play crucial roles in absorbing the surplus. Talad Thai, a significant wholesale center for agricultural products, has already absorbed over 500,000 tons of fruit since February and continues to facilitate distribution during peak fruit season.

Measures to strengthen farmers' bargaining power and improve product prices have also been implemented. This includes the establishment of community coconut packing houses in Ratchaburi province and the first mangosteen auction house in Chanthaburi province, aiming to create a price competition mechanism. Efforts to connect buyers through various market channels are ongoing, particularly for fruits like rambutan, which have been impacted by economic downturns and decreased import demand.

Mr. Jirawut Suwannach, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade, announced the 'Thailand Tropical Fruit Fiesta' at Central Pinklao Shopping Center. The event, organized in collaboration with Central Pattana Public Company Limited, promotes the consumption of Thai fruits and connects farmers directly with consumers. Featuring over 20 booths with quality fruits, the event is set to increase market channels, reduce oversupply, and ensure fair income for farmers.

The Department of Internal Trade will continue promoting Thai fruits under the "Thailand: The Land of Tropical Fruits 2026" campaign, collaborating with various market entities to stimulate domestic consumption and expand market channels. The public is encouraged to choose Thai fruits to support local farmers. The Thailand Tropical Fruit Fiesta is expected to generate sales of at least 100 tons of fruit, exceeding a commercial value of 10 million baht.
