Bangkok:The Democrat Party has taken center stage in co-organizing the 65th International Federation of Liberal Arts Congress in Bangkok, which commenced with a vibrant 'Sabatchai Drum' performance symbolizing the strength of democracy.
According to Thai News Agency, the event is being held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in collaboration with Liberal International, the Asian Council for Liberalism and Democracy (CALD), and the Friedrich Nowmann Foundation for Freedom (FNF). Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party and former Prime Minister, emphasized the importance of freedom within democratic systems during his opening remarks.
Mr. Abhisit addressed global challenges such as geopolitical tensions and misinformation, warning that these issues threaten the liberal-based world order. He proposed three recommendations for liberals globally to adapt and better serve the people, focusing on addressing economic issues, reclaiming a progressive identity, and harmonizing freedom with social context.
Other notable speakers included Professor Dr. Karl-Heinz Paqué, President of Liberal International, and Senator Kiko Pangilinan from the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats, who both stressed the importance of international cooperation in protecting democratic institutions. The morning session featured a panel discussion on 21st-century liberalism with Mr. Abhisit and Lord John Alderdice.
The congress also included discussions on global issues, with panels on women's roles in conflict zones and environmental challenges. The event will continue until November 3rd, with a focus on youth and state intimidation, and will conclude with a keynote by former Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai before the delegation moves to Taipei for further talks.
