Bangkok: "Itthiphon" admits that the Election Commission has been reported for corruption, affecting its performance of duties.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Ittiporn Boonprakong, Chairman of the Election Commission, addressed the allegations against a member of the Election Commission (EC). The member has been accused of colluding with State Audit Office officials in negotiating for positions, specifically involving a payment of 300,000 baht for a promotion. These charges were brought forth by a former State Audit Commissioner and an officer of the Office of the Auditor General. Despite the gravity of these allegations, the EC Chairman clarified that the commission does not have the authority to investigate the matter further and will defer to the judicial process for resolution.
Mr. Boonprakong further explained that no audit committee had been established to look into the matter, as he had only recently been informed of the allegations. He expressed confidence in the existing audit processes and stated that any intervention by the EC could compromise fairness. The Chairman acknowledged the potential impact of these allegations on the EC's work, emphasizing the importance of honesty, sincerity, and transparency for the commission, which serves as an auditing body. However, he maintained that the justice system should be responsible for proving any wrongdoing, and those found guilty should be held accountable.
In response to whether the EC will take any immediate action, Mr. Boonprakong reiterated that no action has been taken thus far because there is already an established mechanism for oversight. He also highlighted that the commission cannot establish a new committee to investigate without appropriate legal backing.
When questioned about discussions within the EC committee regarding the allegations, Mr. Itthiphon mentioned that the topic was discussed informally. He stressed the mutual respect and honor among committee members and reassured that there is already a supportive inspection process in place to handle such issues.
