Lausanne: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided to lift the temporary suspension imposed on the Russian Olympic Committee. This decision marks a significant development in the realm of international sports governance.
According to Thai News Agency, Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, an IOC member, announced that the IOC Executive Board has resolved to temporarily lift the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee's status, which had been effective since October 12, 2023. This decision came after the IOC's Legal Committee conducted a thorough review and concluded that the Russian Olympic Committee no longer included regional sports organizations from territories under the jurisdiction of the Ukrainian National Olympic Committee as members.
The Russian Olympic Committee has assured that it will refrain from any activities in these disputed territories, both presently and in the future. Nonetheless, the IOC Executive Board will maintain vigilant oversight of the Russian Olympic Committee's activities in these areas and retains the authority to implement further measures if necessary.
Key elements of the IOC's decision include the lifting of the temporary suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee's membership, the exclusion of regional sports organizations from territories under the Ukrainian Olympic Committee's jurisdiction, and the cessation of recommended conditions for Russian athletes' participation. Russian athletes re-entering international competitions must adhere to existing anti-doping regulations. The IOC has also declared that it will neither hold IOC Games in Russia nor invite Russian government or state officials to these events. Decisions regarding the display of the Russian flag, national anthem, colors, or symbols at the Olympic Games will be made at an appropriate time. The IOC continues to express solidarity with the Ukrainian Olympic community.
