Nampo: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un announced during a ceremony at Nampo port that North Korea will build two large warships each year, comparable in size to the 5,000-ton Chohyeon, over the next five years.
According to Thai News Agency, Kim Jong-un emphasized the need for rapid naval development while commissioning a new destroyer.
The Chohyeon destroyer has recently completed military tests conducted over the past 14 months. North Korea is also preparing to commission another 5,000-ton destroyer, the Kangkon, along with its 10,000-ton strategic warship. The Kangkon underwent repairs last year following a partial capsizing during its initial launch.
Kim Jong-un acknowledged that the navy had previously been the weakest part of North Korea's military but expressed confidence in its future development. He stated that creating a modern naval base is a priority, and the Central Committee of the Workers' Party discussed plans for its construction at a recent meeting.
The changes in the navy will significantly impact its status, role, and operational scope. Although details were limited, Kim mentioned that the navy's upgrade to accommodate nuclear weapons is ongoing, which will enhance North Korea's nuclear deterrence capabilities.
