Bangkok: A gang of teenagers on motorcycles attacked a Myanmar migrant worker with knives, leaving him seriously injured. A midnight chase ensued as the gang brutally attacked three Myanmar migrant workers, resulting in one of them sustaining severe injuries. The motive behind the attack is suspected to be extortion related to their compatriots.
According to Thai News Agency, multiple CCTV cameras captured the incident around 1:44 AM. The footage shows three injured individuals walking along the roadside, two in white shirts and one in a black shirt, when a group of about nine motorcycles approached and attacked them. The assailants repeatedly slashed the victims with knives, and one critically wounded victim, with a neck injury, sought help from nearby residents. The villagers promptly called emergency services.
Additional CCTV footage recorded the teenagers entering the alley on motorcycles until approximately 1:45 AM on June 17th. The attack occurred in Soi Sriburapha 14, Khlong Chan Subdistrict, Bang Kapi District, Bangkok. Although villagers have since cleaned the crime scene, the community remains gripped by fear and anxiety.
Mr. A, a local resident, recounted that around 1:00 AM, nearly 20 teenagers on nine motorcycles descended into the alley and attacked the Myanmar men with knives. One victim, slashed in the neck, sought help from local residents. Mr. A noted that the cause might stem from an earlier dispute, though he did not recognize the perpetrators.
Villagers suspect the gang may be involved in extorting or robbing fellow migrant workers, with non-compliance leading to physical assaults. After the incident, the perpetrators returned several times, wearing blue helmets, seemingly in search of the victims. This prompted villagers to quickly alert their neighbors to return home for safety.
Police are currently analyzing the CCTV footage to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. They are investigating the possibility of personal conflicts or robbery/extortion involving foreign workers, to proceed with legal action.
