New Labor Law in Thailand Grants Extended Maternity and Paternity Leave

Bangkok: It’s here! New labor law gives mothers 120 days of maternity leave and husbands 15 days, protecting employees nationwide. The government officially enforced the Labor Protection Act (No. 9) on December 7, 2015. Ms. Lalida Periswiwattana, Deputy Government Spokesperson, stated that this reform is a significant step in elevating the rights of Thai workers, aligning with the current era and helping them achieve a better work-family balance.

According to Thai News Agency, following its publication in the Royal Gazette on November 7, 30 days after its publication, the reforms significantly increase employee rights, including an increase in maternity leave to 120 days, with employers paying up to 60 days’ wages; an additional 15 days of leave to care for a sick child at 50% wages; and, for the first time in Thai law, 15 days of maternity leave for spouses with full wages. This also protects contract employees in government agencies, ensuring they receive basic rights comparable to those of general employees.

The government emphasized that the new law reflects its intention to elevate Thai labor standards, enhance family equality, and create a better work environment. It urges employers and employees to study and prepare for smooth implementation and maximize the benefits of workers nationwide.
