ONREP Emphasizes Accuracy and Speed in Environmental Impact Assessments

Bangkok: The Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONREP) has underscored the importance of accuracy, speed, and efficiency in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process. The Secretary-General of ONREP, Mr. Bannarak Sermthong, highlighted these priorities in a recent policy speech, stressing transparency and accountability as key components of the EIA framework.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sermthong outlined the directives received from Mr. Suchart Chomklin, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, and Dr. Raveewan Phuridej, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. These directives were aimed at guiding the Environmental Impact Assessment System Development Division (EISD) and the Environmental Impact Assessment Division (EIAD). The meeting saw participation from key figures, including Mr. Jirawat Rattisunthorn, Deputy Secretary-General of ONREP, Ms. Rungarun Yatibantong, Director of EISD, and Mr. Sittichai Pitisinchuchai, Director of EIAD.

Mr. Sermthong emphasized that the EIA process plays a crucial role in formulating measures to prevent and mitigate environmental impacts. He elaborated that this process involves a wide range of stakeholders, including affected parties, report preparers, the EIA Committee, and various organizations at different levels, as well as the public. The Secretary-General urged all staff to adhere strictly to the principles of 'Accuracy - Speed - Efficiency.' The organization's commitment to academic rigor and adherence to laws has earned it high praise and confidence in its EIA processes.

The Secretary-General highlighted ONREP's ability to complete EIA procedures in approximately 80 days, exceeding legal time requirements. This achievement results from the efforts of the divisions in developing guidelines and manuals to aid report preparation and review. Efficiency was identified as another cornerstone, with a focus on high-quality EIA reports that align with professional standards and support the implementation of effective measures.

Transparency and accountability in the EIA process were also emphasized, with Mr. Sermthong calling for effective communication of operational results to enhance public understanding. He invited reports of any misconduct related to corruption or inappropriate behavior within the EIA system, providing contact details for direct reporting.
