Bangkok: The People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) has called upon the Speaker of the Parliament to initiate a comprehensive overhaul of the legislative system following the 27th parliament's failure to pass any new laws. Phanthil Nuamjerm, a member of the People's Party, emphasized the urgent need for legislative action to address the pressing issues faced by the public.
According to Thai News Agency, Phanthil Nuamjerm expressed concerns over the current Speaker, Mr. Sophon Saram's focus on activities outside his core responsibilities. While acknowledging his efforts in addressing specific issues such as the drug problem in Buriram province, Nuamjerm emphasized that the primary duty of the Speaker and the House of Representatives is to enact laws. He urged the Speaker to prioritize legislative duties over ceremonial engagements like volunteer work and flag-raising ceremonies, urging him to refocus on enacting laws and effectively managing parliamentary sessions.
Nuamjerm highlighted the inefficiency in the legislative process, noting that despite 19 parliamentary meetings since the current session began, no new bills have been passed. He pointed out that while 147 bills from the previous session were addressed, many motions remain pending. He questioned the Speaker's prioritization of outstanding issues and called for an increased focus on addressing them.
Nuamjerm further criticized the Speaker's lack of action in creating a lasting impact as the head of the legislative branch. He proposed adding Friday sessions to consider motions, draft laws, and reports, emphasizing the need for legislation from civil society and MPs to be considered alongside government proposals. He also stressed the importance of reducing expenditure on non-essential ceremonies, focusing instead on the legislative work that addresses public grievances.
The PDRC's call for reform highlights the need for a more efficient parliamentary process that prioritizes the passage of legislation to address the needs of the people, moving beyond ceremonial formalities to ensure effective governance.
