Prime Minister Sihasak Pledges ASEAN Mediation Role Following Myanmar’s Elections

Bangkok: Prime Minister Sihasak presided over a National Security Council meeting following Myanmar's elections. He pledged to act as a mediator in ASEAN negotiations to restore relations and continue addressing unrest and cracking down on scammers, hoping to see peace within Myanmar.

According to Thai News Agency, Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkaew, along with National Security Council Secretary-General Chatchai Bangchawad, announced after chairing a meeting of the ad hoc committee managing the unrest in Myanmar that they had assessed the situation following the Myanmar elections and expressed hope that Myanmar would continue its peace and reconciliation process.

Mr. Sihasak further stated that, at the same time, Thailand shares a border with Myanmar, and therefore, it is undeniable that they must play an active role, both in terms of their interests along the border and their desire to see peace. Therefore, the meeting discussed the possibility of gradually escalating interaction with the military government and various parties in Myanmar. The intention is to engage with the Myanmar military government, and if there is progress, discussions will be held with ASEAN to gradually restore relations with Myanmar.

Mr. Sihasak also stated that, regarding the border area, there are dimensions of security, combat, and the suppression of scammers, transnational crime, drug trafficking, and pollution affecting various rivers, as well as the suspension of border trade. The meeting discussed how to interact with the military government and ethnic groups along the border to maintain peace and combat scammers, and also discussed strategies and responsible parties for driving these efforts.
