Bangkok: Foreign Minister Sihasak Srisuk has criticized Cambodia’s decision to suspend border crossings, labeling it a violation of human rights. This statement comes amidst rising tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, exacerbated by a controversial social media post from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the border situation.
According to Thai News Agency, Sihasak expressed disappointment over the U.S. President’s remarks, which suggested that Thai soldiers stepping on landmines was accidental. He emphasized that the incident was not an accident but rather a result of Cambodia’s deliberate landmine placement, corroborated by ASEAN observers.
In a detailed press conference, Foreign Minister Sihasak addressed several inaccuracies in President Trump’s post on “Truth Social.” He acknowledged the U.S. President’s concern for peace but stressed that mutual understanding is essential. Sihasak criticized the portrayal of the landmine incident as accidental, highlighting that similar incidents have occurred multiple times due to Cambodia’s actions. He also noted that the firing of BM-21 rockets into Thailand’s Sisaket province was intentional, not accidental.
Sihasak underscored Thailand’s longstanding alliance with the United States, expressing disappointment over the impact of the U.S. President’s statement on Thai sentiments. He reiterated Thailand’s commitment to mutual security interests with the U.S. and expressed a willingness to participate in a satellite-based investigation into the border clashes, as requested by Cambodia.
The Foreign Minister also highlighted the issue of Thai citizens stranded at the Poipet border crossing due to Cambodia’s refusal to reopen it, despite prior agreements. He condemned this as a breach of human rights and humanitarian principles, urging for the border to be reopened to allow Thai citizens to return safely.
Sihasak addressed concerns over online scams, human trafficking, and emphasized Thailand’s efforts to combat these issues. He also reassured that trade negotiations with the U.S. would continue independently of the border conflicts. The Foreign Minister concluded by emphasizing the need for readiness on both sides for any meaningful ceasefire, noting that recent actions by Cambodia indicate a lack of preparedness for peace.
