Thai Government Introduces 60% MRT Fare Subsidy to Ease Cost of Living

Bangkok: The government is advancing its efforts to reduce the cost of living by implementing a 60% fare subsidy for four MRT lines-Blue, Purple, Yellow, and Pink-under the "Thai Helps Thai Plus" program, effective from June 1st to September 30th, 2026, accessible through the "Paotang" app.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced the initiative aimed at reducing the financial burden on the public while maintaining purchasing power. The Mass Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), along with the operators of the MRT Blue, Purple, Yellow, and Pink lines, are actively participating in the "Thai Helps Thai Plus 60/40" project. This initiative aligns with the government's policy to support public transportation expenses and foster the use of public transport that is convenient, safe, and cost-effective.

The Deputy Spokesperson highlighted that eligible citizens can avail themselves of this benefit by using the "Paotang" application to pay for MRT fares from June 1st to September 30th, 2026. Under the scheme, the government will cover 60% of the fare, while citizens are responsible for the remaining 40%, with a maximum subsidy limit of 200 baht per person per day and 1,000 baht per person per month. This financial assistance is expected to significantly ease the transportation costs for the public.

The government's initiative also aims to enhance the quality of life by improving access to quality public transportation, thereby reducing traffic congestion and pollution in urban areas. Eligible individuals are encouraged to purchase single journey tickets via the "Paotang" app at any MRT ticket counter on the four lines between 6:00 AM and 11:00 PM. The government reaffirmed its commitment to expanding measures that alleviate the cost of living and support public transportation usage to mitigate economic impacts, ensuring convenient travel for all citizens.
