Three Decades of Compassionate Service by Thai Royal Family’s Foundation

Bangkok: The "Friends in Need (of Thailand) Foundation" recently highlighted the compassionate efforts of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha, who has consistently supported her people over the past thirty years.

According to Thai News Agency, the foundation's Facebook page expressed gratitude for the sustained compassion shown by the royal family towards the Thai people, particularly during times of crisis. The message emphasized that despite recurrent floods causing significant challenges, the affected communities have not been left to fend for themselves, thanks to the compassion of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavadi and Her Royal Highness Princess Somsawali. Both have demonstrated a commitment to aiding those in need through their leadership roles within the foundation.

Mr. Weerasak Kowsurat, director and secretary-general of the Friends in Need (of Thailand) Foundation under the Thai Red Cross Society, shared insights into the foundation's origins during an interview on MCOT News FM 100.5. He recounted how in 1995, following a major flood, Princess Soamsawali played a pivotal role in mobilizing donations for flood victims. Her presence not only resolved conflicts among affected villagers but also inspired the establishment of the foundation, thanks to a modest donation from a local woman.

Princess Soamsawali's encounter with the villagers led her to report the situation to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. His Majesty's response was the establishment of the Friends Helping Friends Foundation, rooted in the principles of assistance and community reliance. The foundation, initially symbolized by a 20-baht donation, has since grown into a significant arm of the Thai Red Cross Society.

Mr. Weerasak detailed how Princess Soamsawali, accompanied by Princess Bajrakitiyabha, actively engaged in relief efforts, often wading through floodwaters to deliver aid. They ensured that relief bags were meticulously prepared and met the needs of recipients, including adhering to religious dietary requirements through Halal certification.

His Majesty's guidance on packing relief supplies underscored the importance of protecting fragile items during transport, reflecting a meticulous attention to detail that characterized his approach to humanitarian efforts.

Under the leadership of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, the foundation has embraced modern innovations, such as telemetry stations for rainfall data collection and air quality monitoring, while continuing to focus on restoring livelihoods post-crisis.

As the foundation marks its 30th anniversary, Mr. Weerasak reflected on the legacy of His Majesty's commitment to assisting those in need. He emphasized the importance of kindness and mutual support, values that remain at the heart of the foundation's mission and resonate with His Majesty's aspirations.
