Bangkok: The Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) has expanded its investigation into a sophisticated heroin trafficking network, successfully seizing nearly 10 kilograms of heroin concealed within winter jackets, Thai silk garments, and coffee packets. The illicit drugs were en route to Australia and Taiwan, having been temporarily stored in Bangkok, with plans for a female flight attendant to transport them overseas.
According to Thai News Agency, Police Lieutenant Colonel Suriya Singhakamol, Secretary-General of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), detailed a nationwide crackdown on drug trafficking networks. The investigation led officers to a dormitory in Soi Rangnam, Ratchathewi district, where they found nearly 10 kilograms of heroin cleverly hidden within coffee packets and jackets, intended for Australia.
Further searches in the Ramkhamhaeng area uncovered heroin concealed inside pink Thai clothing, destined for Taiwan. Authorities confiscated these drugs and discovered that the smuggling operation employed flight attendants to clandestinely transport the narcotics.
The network's modus operandi involves a three-stage process, beginning with producers in Laos sending the drugs through the Golden Triangle, led by a Laotian national. The drugs are then temporarily stored in northeastern Thailand. Subsequently, a group administrator arranges for individuals handling baggage allowances or personal transport to deliver the packages. In Australia, a Thai national known as "Dear" has been identified as a recipient, though their involvement is under investigation.
Investigations have revealed that those involved in the smuggling network include flight attendants, students, and tour groups. The public is warned to be vigilant to avoid falling victim to this scheme. Reports suggest packages are awaiting transport to Australia, New Zealand, and Taiwan. Authorities urge individuals to report any suspicious packages to local police stations to demonstrate their innocence. While charges are not being pressed currently, any future investigation revealing involvement will negate claims of ignorance.
The ONCB Secretary-General highlighted that in addition to clothing, the network conceals drugs in instant noodles, vases, and coffee sachets, smuggling them from neighboring countries. The group operates on an ad-hoc basis, contacting couriers as needed for drug shipments.
Authorities are currently tracking a man in a black hoodie who delivered a box of heroin to a flight attendant. Using a small Toyota sedan with an unknown license plate, he has yet to contact authorities to prove his innocence.
