Bangkok Police Launch Manhunt for Ride-Hailing Driver After Assault Incident

Bangkok: The Bangkok Metropolitan Police Commissioner has initiated a search for a driver from a popular ride-hailing app who allegedly assaulted a Japanese restaurant owner in the Asoke area. The driver has been identified, and charges are expected to be filed soon.

According to Thai News Agency, the incident gained widespread attention on social media after the victim, a 52-year-old Japanese businessman, filed a complaint at Thonglor Police Station. The businessman, who owns a restaurant in the Sukhumvit area, recounted using the Bolt app for his commute. However, the driver stopped in Asoke, citing traffic issues, which led to an argument. As the businessman exited the vehicle, the 23-year-old driver allegedly assaulted him, resulting in a head injury and multiple bruises. The altercation was halted by nearby motorcycle taxi drivers and bystanders on May 28th.

Subsequently, the victim was hospitalized for a medical evaluation. The results of this evaluation are pending and will be crucial for the ongoing investigation. Pol. Gen. Siam Boonsom, the Bangkok Metropolitan Police Commissioner, has prioritized the search for the driver. Investigators have confirmed the driver's identification and are in the process of summoning him to face charges.

Currently, the driver faces initial charges of "assault." Depending on the medical findings, additional charges of "assault causing serious injury" may be considered.
