China Reaffirms Support for UN Leadership in International Affairs

Beijing: China supports the United Nations taking a leading role in international affairs. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held discussions with former Senegalese President MacKissal, a candidate for the United Nations Secretary-General, in Beijing. China reaffirmed its support for the United Nations to play a more central and leading role in the effective management of international affairs. Former Guinea-Bissau President Oumaro Cissoko Mbalo also participated in the meeting.

According to Thai News Agency, during the discussions, the former Senegalese leader expressed his commitment to the One China principle, commending China's consistent support for multilateralism. He also stated that UN reforms should be gradual, results-oriented, and uphold the sanctity of the Security Council, focusing on the global development agenda, and expressed readiness to cooperate with China to enhance cooperation among developing countries.

Meanwhile, Wang Yi stated that safeguarding and strengthening the United Nations is a shared aspiration of member states, and the next Secretary-General should respond to these calls and prioritize the needs of the Global Southern region. He emphasized that, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China attaches great importance to cooperation with Africa and will participate in the UN leadership selection process in the most constructive and responsible manner.
