CIB Police Intercept Couple Smuggling Over 200,000 Methamphetamine Pills

Phra nakhon si ayutthaya: Central Investigation Bureau police intercepted a couple transporting over 200,000 methamphetamine pills. They confessed to being major drug dealers in the northern region. Officers from the Central Investigation Bureau arrested two suspects, Mr. Somchai, 48, and Ms. Chanakan, 50, on charges of "jointly selling Category 1 narcotics (amphetamine or methamphetamine)." A large quantity of narcotics was seized as evidence. The arrests took place on Highway 32, kilometer 42, Ban Mai Subdistrict, Maharaj District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province.

According to Thai News Agency, this arrest stems from an investigation following the arrest of two suspects in Hua Toey Subdistrict, Phunphin District, Surat Thani Province on May 6, 2026. In that initial arrest, approximately 294,000 methamphetamine pills were seized. Police Task Force 1 and Task Force 5 of the 5th Division then investigated and reviewed CCTV footage from the surrounding area and related routes. They identified the individuals in the CCTV footage as Mr. Somchai and Ms. Chanakan. The footage clearly showed Mr. Somchai smuggling the drugs on foot to deliver them to the two suspects arrested earlier in Surat Thani. Following this, the investigative team planned and executed the arrests.

During questioning, Mr. Somchai confessed that he picked up the drugs from various locations in Chiang Rai province. He would then package and hide them inside his car to deceive authorities, awaiting orders from customers as arranged.

Mr. Somchai admitted that some drugs were still hidden inside his rented house in Lampang Province. When officers went to investigate, they found over 100,000 pills packaged in a backpack inside his bedroom, along with packaging equipment on a shelf. The suspect has been initially detained for legal proceedings.
