Concrete Awning Collapse Near Wat Traimit Claims Life of Homeowner’s Son-in-Law

Bangkok: A tragic incident unfolded near Wat Traimit Witthayaram Worawihan on Charoen Krung Road when a concrete awning of an over 100-year-old building collapsed, resulting in the death of a man. The authorities reported that at 4:52 PM, the cement awning fell, injuring the son-in-law of the homeowner. Despite being promptly rescued and transported to Samitivej Chinatown Hospital, the injured man succumbed to his injuries.

According to Thai News Agency, initial reports revealed that the victim was walking towards the front of the house to greet family members when the awning collapsed, crushing him under the debris. The incident has prompted officials to investigate the cause and assess the structural integrity of the building.

Furthermore, the collapse caused damage to at least two parked vehicles, and officials have cordoned off the area due to fears of further debris collapse. Traffic has been closed off at the scene, leading to congestion on Rama IV Road. Local resident Ms. Thanpicha recounted hearing a loud bang, reminiscent of a building collapsing, and saw white dust filling the air. This event has heightened the fears of residents concerned about the safety of the century-old buildings in the area.

By 5:50 PM, Mr. Chatchart Sittipunt, Bangkok's gubernatorial candidate, had arrived at the scene to assess the situation.
