Bangkok: The Department of Local Administration has announced an extension to the deadline for listing local government exam candidates as it accelerates investigations into alleged examination fraud. The move comes after a letter was received by Deputy Director-General Thanon Phanphiphas from a group of representatives of affected candidates, urging a swift conclusion to the investigation process to ensure fairness.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Thanon acknowledged the difficulties faced by units due to the alleged fraud and emphasized the importance of expediting the verification process. He noted that a quicker resolution would allow for a faster reporting process, benefiting those who passed the exam honestly. The Central Committee for Local Government Employee Examinations (KST) is expected to announce its findings following a committee meeting.
Mr. Thanon addressed the possibility of separating honest candidates from those implicated in fraud, stating that the principle of protecting honest candidates and taking action against cheaters would be upheld. This includes dismissal, prosecution, and a lifetime ban from applying for local government positions. He also clarified that reports about the cancellation of accounts are intended for those involved in fraud, with reinstatement requests taking up to two years unless the process is expedited.
The answer sheet files, currently held by the Director-General of the National Statistical Office, have been requested by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) for use in their investigation. Mr. Thanon expressed a desire for a swift resolution, highlighting that the investigation's progress is a matter for the NACC and police. The police have sought information from officials involved in the investigation, and Mr. Thanon has already reported findings to the Ministry of Interior's fact-finding committee.
Mr. Thanon assured that the examination and procurement processes were conducted transparently, adhering to the terms of reference (TOR), which required digital answer sheets for verification. He emphasized that the Department of Local Administration only has scanned copies of answer sheets and scores, with no access to the answer key. The names of examinees were provided by Srinakharinwirot University, and the department's role was to certify and announce results based on provided information.
