Dr. Mallika’s Vision for Bangkok: Transforming Old Markets into World-Class Tourist Destinations

Bangkok: Dr. Mallika Boonmeetrakul Mahasuk, candidate number 14 for Bangkok Governor, visited Trok Mo Market in Phra Nakhon District, near Bangkok City Hall, to meet with vendors and residents. The purpose was to listen to their concerns and present policies to stimulate the grassroots economy through the development of old markets and historical districts of Bangkok.

According to Thai News Agency, the atmosphere in the market was lively, with vendors and residents warmly welcoming Dr. Mallika. Many requested to take photos and engage in conversations with her throughout her visit, resulting in particularly bustling morning trading. Trok Mo Market is one of the oldest markets in the Phra Nakhon area, with a long history connected to the original community and the lifestyle of Bangkok residents. It serves as a source of consumer goods, fresh food, prepared food, and local products, preserving the unique character of the old city. Its proximity to several important tourist attractions gives it potential to become a destination for both Thai and foreign tourists.

Dr. Mallika stated that Bangkok has numerous old markets and historical communities that can be developed into a 'creative economy' if managed appropriately. This includes landscape development, cultural activities, promotion of local food, street food, art, and linking tourist routes to increase tourist spending time and generate income for small business owners. 'Markets are not just places to buy and sell; they are the charm of Bangkok, economic hubs for communities, and tourist attractions that reflect the city's identity. If seriously promoted, they can generate significant revenue, stimulate the grassroots economy, and create many more jobs for Bangkok residents.'

Dr. Mallika's policy aims to transform key markets and commercial areas in all 50 districts into creative economy zones, linking tourism, culture, food, and contemporary activities to enhance Bangkok's competitiveness. This will also improve the quality of life for vendors and residents, while simultaneously building Bangkok's image as a vibrant metropolis that is walkable, attractive for tourism, and a desirable investment destination year-round.
