Bangkok: The government has mandated enhanced aviation security protocols, focusing on more rigorous screening of airline crew members, to combat drug smuggling activities.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is committed to upholding aviation safety standards and safeguarding the country's reputation. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Mr. Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, has tasked Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr. Patarapong Pataraprasit, with addressing the situation involving Thai airline crew members who were detained by Australian officials after narcotics were found in their luggage. The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has been directed to work with relevant agencies to enhance preventative measures to prevent future occurrences.
The deputy spokesperson highlighted that initial reports indicate the crew member was on duty on a flight from Thailand to Melbourne, Australia, on June 25, 2026. The individual was searched by customs officials upon arrival, leading to the discovery of narcotics hidden in his luggage. Legal proceedings are currently underway in Australia.
Ms. Lalida explained that at present, all crew members must undergo security screening in line with passenger standards. Although there are dedicated lanes to aid their duties, both personnel and baggage are subject to inspections as per international guidelines. Security checks at airports aim to prevent dangerous items, weapons, and explosives that could jeopardize aircraft safety, while the detection of narcotics or other illegal items requires collaboration with customs and drug enforcement agencies.
The Deputy Spokesperson further conveyed that the Deputy Minister of Transport has instructed CAAT to engage Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT), airlines, customs, and drug enforcement bodies to formulate additional measures. These measures involve stricter controls over crew luggage acceptance, improved information sharing among agencies, and enhanced intelligence coordination to better identify risks. The objective is to balance safety standards with passenger convenience, ensuring that public services and travel remain uninterrupted.
Ms. Lalida affirmed, 'The government will persist in advancing aviation security measures through integrated cooperation among all relevant agencies to deter illegal activities, bolster confidence in Thailand's aviation system, and sustain globally recognized safety standards, while also ensuring appropriate convenience for passengers.'
