Bangkok: The National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) is revolutionizing the production of Thai durian, often hailed as the "King of Fruits," by integrating advanced research and innovation.
According to Thai News Agency, the NSTDA has brought together the expertise of its affiliated national research centers, including the National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC), the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC), the National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC), and the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC), to improve the quality of Thai durian production from its roots to the global market. This initiative addresses several challenges faced by farmers, such as issues with unripe durian, diseases, pests, rising costs, and the need for stringent traceability in international markets.
The transformation begins with upstream management, where NSTDA has applied smart agriculture and precision maintenance techniques. NANOTEC has developed chelated plant micronutrients that enhance nutrient absorption by encapsulating them with natural chelating agents, promoting faster plant responses and aligning with Thailand's green agriculture principles.
Protecting and preserving crops is another critical aspect of NSTDA's strategy. MTEC has introduced Magik Growth durian wrapping bags, designed from a special polymer formula to protect durian from pests while reducing chemical use. Meanwhile, BIOTEC's biocontrol methods use effective microorganisms to combat root and stem rot, creating a safe agricultural ecosystem and increasing the value of Thai durian.
In terms of quality control and downstream processes, NSTDA has developed tools to ensure the quality and safety of Thai durian exports. NANOTEC's N-sense portable BY2 residue analyzer detects harmful substances quickly and accurately, enhancing export confidence. NECTEC's Durian Trace cross-border traceability system further bolsters transparency by allowing consumers to access detailed durian history through a simple QR code scan.
NSTDA's comprehensive approach not only addresses immediate challenges but also establishes a technological infrastructure that empowers Thai farmers and entrepreneurs to market durian sustainably and successfully on the international stage.
